Julie Mahoney was born in England. Just after her second birthday, she was carried across on a ship, with no memory of the country she’d left behind.
She lived across several states, meeting her husband in the Northern Territory, before settling in Far North Queensland,
a place she fell in love with and has called home ever since.
Perhaps it is that early, unremembered beginning that draws her so persistently back to England in fiction.
Her sister’s theory is that she’s simply writing about her past lives.
Julie writes historical fiction driven by character rather then commentary.
In her novels, she hands the voice entirely to those who inhabit the past, allowing them to tell their own stories in their own words.
The result is fiction that feels lived-in rather than imagined.
